Although there is no official name as such, the way it runs under a cover of “Jeberti Ethnic Group” is nothing but a small Islamic sect which has been in the making for tha last 70 or more years by reviving the ancient name of Jeberti. The Order is currecntly establishing itself in exile. In short, I can say it is an exiled Eritrean Sufi Order which is struggling to establish its center in Eritrea.
Once part of the Khatmiyyah Order branch in the highland of Eritrea and formerly an independent and oldest Sufi Order in the horn of Africa, its members are scattered throughout the world.
Jebertiyyah Order was founded by Abdirahman bin Isma’ail al-Jabarti in 10th or 11thC in Zeila Somalia. From there, it succeeded to spread Islam in the horn of Africa, North of Africa and the Middle East.
Abdirahman bin Isma’il al-Jabarta is son of a Sufi Sheikh Isma’il Ibin Ibrahim Al-Jabarta of the Qadiriyyah Order.
Qadiriyyah Order was founded by Abdul Qadir Gilani(1077 – 1166). Abdul Qadir Gilan is from Iran. Abdul Qadir Gilani founded his order in Baghdad Iraq.
Sheikh Ismail Ibin Ibrahim al-Jabarti had several sons among whom was Abdirahim bin Isla’il al-Jabarti.
Abdirahman bin Isma’il al-Jabarti married Dobira from the Dir Clan that later established its own clan, Darood Clan. This gave the establishement of Qadiriyyah Order in North Somali.
Abdirahman bin Isma’il al-Jabarti thus succeeded to prosetylize Qadiriyyah Order. From this the converts started to identify themselves Jeberti, hence, al-Jabarti.
With time, Jeberti community started to spread throughout the horn of Africa reaching to Eritrea.
Although the Jeberti community had no specific center, they continued to identify themselves Jeberti where ever they go.
As part of the struggle, Jeberti commmunity are struggling to establish their center in Eritrea. It is part of Islamic religious movement that is fighting to establish a new Order, called Jabartiyya Order. But, the movement is not open and transparent. It is under a cover of a different ethnic group.
This movement has grown fast in recent days after they established a political wing, called al- Nahda Party, several Charity organizations and Social Media outlets.
The movement is much complicated. It is in fact confusing. However, if you follow the trends closely, the developments we have seen for the last 10 years or so, it is not difficult to understand the anecdotes.
The Jebertiyyah brotherhood is created by Eritreans of dufferent origin and from different communities.
