On August 18, 2017, I have read news from www.assenna.com about the death of a former veteran Freedom Fighter who was kept in prison since 2003 by PFDJ security agent.
Assenna reported that Veteran freedom fighter and former Director General of Telecommunications; Mr. Solomon Habtom died on August 18, 2017 in the notorious Asmara prison, known as *Carchelli*.
Families of Solomon Habtom had no prior information about their beloved son until PFDJ Security Agent called them to collect deceased body of their son. It is a heart breaking to receive a call and be ordered to take a died body without questioning what happened.
Mr. Solomon Habtom was among those few highly educated professionals who joined the armed struggle in the 1970s. He studied at the University of Addis Ababa. Later on, he did his further studies in Sweden.
He had two sisters and one brother who were martyred during the armed struggle for independence.
His brother, Martyr Werede habtom, is among those freedom fighters who was martyred in the 1978 war to liberate of massawa from Ethiopian occupation while driving a tank. He was burned with his tank after Derge attcked them. Today, his tank is among those three tanks erected as a monument to tell the story of sacrifice paid to liberate Massawa.
In 2003, he was arrested by PFDJ Security Agents and since then he was not brought to court. No one knows what his crimes was.
His families had no contact with him and did not know where he was kept.
*Carchelli* is one of the most secretive and notorious prison centers found in the heart of Asmara. Though almost every Eritrean has heard about its existence, almost no one knows about its exact location. It is a place where most Eritrean political prisoners are tortured inhumanely on daily bases.
